The Communications Network is guided by the values of Community, Learning, and Leadership. At ComNet17 in Miami Beach, we put those values to work to give back to the community hosting us in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.
Since then, our Day of Service has become a ComNet tradition. We saw dozens of attendees raise their hands to lend time and support to worthy organizations in San Francisco, Austin, and Atlanta. We’re excited to continue this legacy in Kansas City this year!

HappyBottoms
Time: 1:00-3:00 pm | registration is closed

Background: HappyBottoms is KC’s diaper bank. Since 2009, HappyBottoms has distributed more than 23 million diapers to local families so that their children can stay clean, dry, and healthy. HappyBottoms provides diapers through a network of more than 65 social service agency partners and 5 hospitals.
What you’ll do: Activities may include wrapping diaper packages, filling monthly orders for agencies/hospitals, or cleaning distribution bag tags.

reStart
Time: 12:00-2:00 pm | registration is closed

Background: reStart exists to end homelessness in KC. reStart’s mission is to empower all people facing or experiencing homelessness with housing and services that inspire hope.
What you’ll do: Activities may include building hygiene kits, sorting/labeling clothes, or assembling bed kits. A small group (2-3 volunteers) will have the opportunity to provide a mentor session on building storytelling components to be used in a capital campaign.

Ability KC
Time: 12:30-3:30 pm | registration is closed

Background: Founded in 1947, Ability KC has grown into a place unlike any other in the region. We’re proud to say we are the longest standing outpatient comprehensive rehabilitation facility in Kansas City that is building brighter futures for children and adults with disabilities, providing a continuum of care for all of life’s milestones.
What you’ll do: Tour their facilities and: create a communications strategy around storytelling for impact — OR — support preparation for family engagement activities at Ability KC’s Mary Shaw Branton Therapeutic Preschool, which may include assembling kits, organizing and cleaning equipment, and/or labeling and sorting household items or clothing.

Community Builders of Kansas City
Time: 12:30-3:30 pm | registration is closed

Background: Community Builders of Kansas City is Kansas City’s largest urban core developer strengthening families and transforming communities. A not-for-profit community development corporation, we personally work with the neighborhoods we serve to build meaningful relationships, acting as community convener, facilitator, and resource for services.
What you’ll do: Tour their new campus and: help Community Builders of Kansas City find ways to get national coverage and create a plan for media outreach.
